What were some of the key players in Christ's passion week doing around the time of His birth in Bethlehem? I did some homework on Bible time customs and came up with this fictionalized account.

Cook Christmas Ebook: Do You See What I See?

David C. Cook publishing has another free ebook on all the major outlets -- today and tomorrow only: Do You See What I See? by Ross Parsley. Obviously a Christmas book. According to the publisher's publicity materials:

In Do You See What I See? pastor Ross Parsley shows how God uses ordinary people to fulfill His plan and purpose. He gives a warm, humorous, and uniquely honest look into the nativity story. Along the way he highlights how God's favor and plans are often followed by dashed hopes, heartache, and disappointment. But he also shows that if we're faithful with what God puts in front of us we can accomplish the extraordinary.
Sounds like a nice way to prepare for the season. I've just downloaded my copy.

God's Love
by R. C. Sproul

Love has come to mean many things. It’s used to describe emotions. It’s the glue for relationships. It frames countless stories.

And the greatest of these stories opens before time began and echoes throughout eternity. It’s the story of God’s unrelenting, overwhelming love for His people. Yet the truth of love is even more majestic, more staggering, and more extraordinary than we can understand: God doesn’t just love us. He is love.

Renowned theologian and teacher Dr. R. C. Sproul takes a remarkable look at this most profound truth. God’s Love delves deep into Scripture to explore this dynamic attribute of God, which finds its ultimate expression in His Son. Dr. Sproul also examines seeming paradoxes of God, such as a loving God and divine hate, and how love coexists with His sovereignty. Practical, insightful, and revolutionary, God’s Love compels and calls us to reflect His nature of unconditional love.

Brennan Manning Book free on Kindle today

The Furious Longing of God by Brennan Manning

Imagine a stormy day at sea, your ship yielding to a relentless wind, pummeled by crashing waves, subject to the awesome force of nature. A force that is both fierce and majestic. A power that is nothing short of furious.
Such is God's intense, consuming love for His children. It's a love that knows no limits, and no boundaries. A love that will go to any lengths, and take any risks, to pursue us.
Renowned author and ragamuffin Brennan Manning presents a love story for the brokenhearted. For those who are burdened by heavy religion. For those who feel they can never measure up. It is a provocative and poignant look at the radical, no-holds-barred love of our Heavenly Father. It is a message that will forever change how you view God.

Kindle Giveaway: One of Ours!!

Today our featured free Kindle book is mine: Conquering the Time Factor: Second Edition with Study Guide. Free today through Monday only:

Here's a quick highlight:

Instead of allowing us to remain overwhelmed, this book offers to help us conquer. Conquering is so much better than remaining mired in the muck of overwhelmedness.

The best news is that the promise of helping us conquer isn't an idle, pie-in-the-sky wish. There are concrete, practical examples in these pages that really work in the real world—they've taught me to conquer most days, and they can do the same for you.
I can't tell you how many times readers have written or emailed me, quoting "chapter and verse" from this book—letting me know how its counsel has made all the difference in how much they can accomplish in a twenty-four hour day. For example, several months ago one reader posted the following comment on the guestbook of my website:

I have just re-read Conquering the Time Factor and can't believe how many of the Myths continue to grip me. Being overwhelmed is probably my most difficult "spiritual" issue. I suppose this is another area that God wants us to trust Him for daily. Thanks for being candid & honest, and for offering valid, biblical answers. You've really helped me. I keep this as a reference book! God bless you & your ministry.

Not only do comments like this hearten me, but they reinforce the value of a biblical model of time ordering that puts God's priorities where they belong—in the first place on our calendars or day planners. You, too, can conquer the overwhelming issue of time. ....

From the back cover:

Are 24 hours never quite enough for you?

If daily scheduling and balancing the lives of your family members and your work responsibilities and your church commitments and your community involvement is leaving you breathless and overwhelmed …

There is Hope! Right Here and Right Now!

In this newly updated and expanded edition of Conquering the Time Factor, author Julie-Allyson Ieron blasts the myths that are keeping you from making the most of the moments, hours, days, and years God has entrusted to you.

“Julie effectively blasts the myths that often govern our concept of time. Highly recommended.”
—Gayle Roper
Author of Autumn Dreams, Summer Shadows and Spring Rain

“Julie teaches you how to say no and what to say no to.”
—Jon Walker
Editor, Rick Warren’s Ministry ToolBox

“Conquering the Time Factor gives us the tools to create the white space in our lives—the space for reflection, for connecting with people and even for fun.”
—Wendy Lawton
Author of Courage to Run and Almost Home

“After just a few chapters, I found myself already operating more efficiently.”
—Andy Scheer
Managing Editor, Jerry B. Jenkins Christian Writers Guild

Hope you enjoy. Please pass the info along to your friends and contacts. This is a great crossover book!

Free eBook from my pastor - Colin Smith

Free Gospel Coalition Booklet:
The Plan by Colin S. Smith

According to Unlocking the Bible Website:

This book examines God’s plan for fulfilling his promise. It was written by Pastor Colin Smith (of the Gospel Coalition and Unlocking the Bible) and edited by D.A. Carson and Tim Keller. The Plan is available in PDF format for free.

The different sections are:1. God Makes a Promise: The Story of the Old Testament2. Christ Fulfills the Promise: The Story of the Gospels3. The Church Communicates the Promise: The Story of Acts4. The Holy Spirit Delivers the Promise: The Story of the New Testament Letters

Nothing you do and nothing that happens to you can stop God from fulfilling his plan or even slow him down…God knows exactly what he is doing. You can have confidence in knowing that the events of your life are not spinning our of control or settled by random chance but that they are in the hands of God.”

Caregiver Devotional: The Gospel ... According to Jesus

Caregiver Devotional: The Gospel ... According to Jesus:
Jesus preached repentance as His core message (Matt. 4:17). So did John the Baptist to prepare the way before Him (Matt. 3:2). In a chapter of my new book, I give a more complete explanation of what this means (It’s called The GOD Interviews and I hope you’ll read it when it releases in September 2012), but here’s the gist. ...

Vote Against Jargon

We're always chiding writing students about removing Christian jargon from our writing so audiences will understand us. It looks like our industry isn't the only one to suffer from the jargon malady. Forbes magazine recently did this tongue-in-cheek article on the topic, titled Jargon Madness (think March madness!). Worth a read.

FREE on Kindle today: Eye-opening Book on Truly Knowing Christ

Secondhand Jesus by Glenn Packiam - free on Kindle today.

Amazon offers a couple of quotes they call popular highlights--things other readers have identified as key in the book. Here are several to give you an idea of what you're getting in this candid, even shocking book. I read the 10-page excerpt on Amazon and I'm hooked:

Don’t look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don’t fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires total attention. (Matt. 7:13 –14 MSG "e;

Ron Hutchcraft on our Response to Culture

Author and radio personality Ron Hutchcraft wrote a devotional today titled Everything's Moving that is spot-on about the state of our culture and the way we've moved our sense of right and wrong right along with it.

Here's a quote that'll whet your appetite for the whole devotional:

Lately, I've been getting that shifting landscape feeling a lot. Believers feeling comfortable watching things they would never have watched ten years ago. Accepting behaviors and ideas that would have been unthinkable only a short time ago. Feeling free to wear less and show more. Letting their kids do what the culture calls cool - things we thought were dangers to avoid a few years ago. Dissolving marriages that were, until recently, thought to be something that "no man" should "put asunder." And all this among growing questions about what marriage even is. Yes, the ground's been moving under our feet a lot lately. It's more important than ever to "hang onto something heavy."--Ron Hutchcraft

He isn't in the least timid to reflect the light of Truth to us. Definitely a recommended read.

What Do Users Think?

Julie Allyson Ieron's Bible Reference Collection is a must-have tool for a Christian writer's research. I don't have to have six books open on my desk. All I need is to open the Bible Reference Collection on my computer desktop. The tools are easy to learn and use. Multiple Bible translations, commentaries, dictionaries, and Bible studies are available at my fingertips. I can highlight, bookmark or take notes within the program. One of the great helps in the collection is that the Bible verses, reference books and Bible studies are interlinked by topic or verse. I have this collection on my PC for home study and on my laptop for when I travel. I no longer have to pack boxes of research books to take with me.

All 75 volumes are interconnected, cross-referenced, and keyed into Bible translations when installed on a PC or Mac. Search topics, read reference books on screen, print passages, use the Bible study questions to teach, and much more.

Every Christian (Writer) Needs to Read This ...

No, I didn't write it. But I wish I had. It's by my friend and colleague Chris Fabry -- It's a creative and vibrant take on the way the enemy attacks those of us who work hard to write for God's glory. The enemy's tactics seem to be the same with so many of us -- when I listened to this yesterday on Chris Fabry Live, I was astounded at the similarities with many of the lies I've heard from the enemy in recent weeks.

Many thanks to Chris for being so transparent as to admit to this battle of wills -- and to remind us of how to respond in a God-honoring way when it's our turn!

Okay, so here's the link:

Congratulations to Stephanie! My assistant Joy read all the entries, and she said Stephanie's was the most direct and focused answer to the question.

To win her copy of Dave Fessenden's book: Writing the Christian Nonfiction Book: Concept to Contract, Stephanie wrote:

Why I should receive the free book, Writing the Christian Nonfiction Book: "God knows"--and so does my CWG mentor--that I need all the help I can get as I transition from active Kingdom service to "manuscript ministry!"
Stephanie, Dave will autograph the book for you personally -- and we'll get it off to you! We'll be excited to hear how God uses this on your path of "manuscript ministry." Be sure to write us and let us know -- we'll post your comments right here.
Thanks to one and all for entering! And thanks to Dave for this great gift to us.

Read This Story ... Then ... Tell Your Story

Here's a link I came across thanks to my friend and colleague Cheryl Moeller. It's an amazing story of God's grace and mercy told by cancer survivor Elaine Doss. Not only will you catch a glimpse of the way God may choose to work in your heart in the middle of your most trying circumstances ... but as a writer and a Christian, you just might see in this retelling by Elaine another way to share your story of God's faithfulness. So read as a reader ... and read again as a writer.

Free tonight on Kindle: Coffeeshop Conversations: Making the Most of Spiritual Small Talk -- it sounds fabulous. Making the message of the gospel clear and relevant to everyday conversation. Great idea. I'm looking forward to reading this one!

GUEST BLOG: Dave Fessenden on Writing Christian Nonfiction

Today's guest blog is from someone I respect and admire. I suppose you're bound to do that with an editor who calls you on the phone, asks whether your amazing book proposal is still available for publication, and then proceeds to buy (and publish) not just that book, but another besides. That's how my friendship with Dave Fessenden took off -- more than a decade ago.

Dave is now with another publishing organization, this one a missionary endeavor, where he and his wife Jacqui raise their own support to have the privilege of publishing books about Jesus Christ in various underserved countries across the globe.

And Dave is the author of a fabulous writing text ... Writing the Christian Nonfiction Book: From Concept to Contract ... which happens to be the book he's autographing and giving away to one of our Write Joyfully readers this coming weekend.

Which reminds me ...

HAVE YOU SUBMITTED YOUR CONTEST ENTRY YET? JUST 6 DAYS LEFT .... you definitely want to get in on the opportunity to win a free copy of Dave's book!

Now, then, here's Dave with some thoughts for your writing today ...

Utile Dulci
Today I stumbled across a Latin term which clearly expresses an important principle of writing: utile dulci, which means “the useful with the agreeable.”

To quote from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary website,

In Ars Poetica, Horace offered this advice: “He who joins the useful with the agreeable, wins every vote, by delighting and at the same time instructing the reader.” In other words, the successful poet—or more broadly, communicator—combines the edifying with the enjoyable, turns business into pleasure.

This brings to mind the frustrations I used to have when working as a technical writer. Engineers and programmers wanted my written instructions to be totally utilitarian—useful, but not agreeable. To their minds, the only measure of writing was accuracy; if it communicated “just the facts, ma’m,” it was acceptable. Since any literary quality in the writing was judged to be esoteric and immeasurable, it was not important. (Even measurable issues, such as grammar and syntax, were sometimes considered optional!) Fortunately, it appears that this kind of technical documentation is losing popularity.

Technical hacks have kissing cousins in the academic and theological fields (“the letter kills, but the spirit gives life”). The information they provide may be useful, but it is not always presented in an agreeable form. No, I am not intending here to make a wholesale condemnation of all technical, academic and theological writing, especially since the situation seems to be improving. I am simply saying that in these fields there can be a tendency toward a merely utilitarian approach to writing—a style which is hard to read and should be avoided.

At the opposite extreme is the literary (or perhaps pseudo-literary) writers, who are enamored with their own words, and think that poetic and rhetorical devices such as alliteration and metaphor can substitute for meaning and clarity. Their writing may be agreeable (if only to themselves), but it is far from useful.

Striking the balance, in which utility and beauty are seen to go hand-in-hand and complement each other, is the only successful approach.

How Do You Get Your Writing Ideas?

Someone asked me yesterday where I get my ideas for nonfiction that (hopefully!) sells. I gave her a few of my answers, but I'd love to hear yours.

Also, if this is a subject that interests you, I located this book, free on Kindle today, that asks and answers the same question: How to Create Nonfiction Book Ideas that Sell.

Check it out, of course. But really, I'm more interested in giving you the opportunity to share your ideas.

Thanks in advance!
